"Throwing a deer hair mouse at large bass is one of life’s finer pleasures and the same can be said of mousing rainbows in backcountry Alaska.
The Mimic Mouse was born out of a need for an ultralight, compact mouse pattern that was versatile, durable, realistic, and exceptionally buoyant. It lands softly, swims true, and has movement to spare.
The most unique attribute of the fly’s design is that the entire underbody of the fly is made of palmered soft hackle instead of wrapped zonker strips.
This allows the pattern to float high yet still absorb enough water to effectively right itself upon landing, all while remaining lightweight when soaked.
The foam back is doubled to form the head and the extended “tab” on the back is left long intentionally to aid in keeping the fly upright in rough water and to provide additional buoyancy.
The fly is tied on the TMC 201R which is literally the perfect hook for the pattern. The wide gape and 1X heavy wire give the hook more bite and substance when bigger fish are a possibility.
Overall, the Mimic Mouse is small but mighty and is my first choice when reaching for a rodent pattern in my box!"
