"The Designated Hitter series of flies evolved in the same way a classic hamburger evolves in to a “gourmet” burger with sautéed onions and mushrooms or whatever else you like. I simply took the classic Madam X and adapted it to the local stoneflies I was seeing on the Bitterroot River. The series began with the Skwala, then the Salmon fly and Golden Stone. I blended dubbing to match the abdomens, added a cut wing under the appropriately dyed color of elk hair overwing. Then I threw in an egg sack on the Skwala and Golden, slapped on some rubber legs and I was fishing. Not exactly rocket science but a great “plug and play” method of adapting a classic pattern to your local and regional hatches."
